This vegan chocolate hemp smoothie is rich, creamy, and filled with protein from hemp and almond butter. It's the perfect base to make different flavoured smoothies, and I've included several variations below.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • Frozen banana: this is a large part of what makes for a creamy smoothie. You can use a banana that isn't frozen, but the smoothie will be thinner.
  • Milk: use any non-dairy milk you like. I usually use a creamy nut milk for extra richness.
  • Almond butter: sub another nut or seed butter if preferred.
  • Hemp: be sure to use soft hemp hearts, not hemp seeds, which are crunchy.
  • Ice: skip the ice cubes if you prefer your drinks not to be too cold.

How to Make a Hemp Smoothie

Be sure to freeze the banana in advance. If you have ripe bananas, freeze a few at a time to use for smoothies like this one.

Smoothie steps 1 and 2, before and after blending.

Step 1: add all of the ingredients to a blender.

Step 2: blend until very smooth and serve immediately.

Top Tips

  • Mix it up: if plain chocolate feels a little boring, use one of the add-ins below, like coffee or cinnamon.
  • Use a ripe banana: a spotty or brown banana will be sweeter and make for a nicer texture (less starchy). Use the same ripeness that you would reach for when making banana bread.
  • Sweeten to taste: if your banana isn't all that ripe and you feel you need a little more sweetness, try adding a date or two, or a dash of your favourite liquid sweetener.

Add-in Suggestions

Change the flavours to whatever you prefer or have on hand. These are my favourites:

  • Mint: replace the vanilla with a few drops of mint extract
  • Mocha: use ¼ cup cold brew instead of ice
  • Mushroom: add a teaspoon of your favourite mushroom powder. I like this one
  • Greens: add a teaspoon of wheatgrass powder. I love Amazing Grass
  • Mexican Chocolate: add ½ teaspoon cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne powder
  • Peanut Butter Cup: replace almond butter with peanut butter
